Course Description

General background in ENT through patient care in the OR, clinics, and in patients at Shands Jacksonville. General ENT, hearing eval. head and neck cancer and children's ENT problems will be seen.

Evaluated Competencies

#1 Professionalism:

Educational Objectives: Demonstrates respect for patients; families; and members of the health care team. Demonstrates an attitude for caring. Observes patient confidentiality. Truth. Punctuality. Demonstrates ability at assessment and willingness to admit and learn from mistakes.

Method of Evaluation: Faculty observation and feedback from department members.

#2 Patient Care:

Educational Objectives: Conducts effective comprehensive otolaryngology history and physical and records information adequately. Integrates the information obtained from above into a coherent differential diagnosis and uses this in a manner to determine cost effective treatment and testing. Appropriately interprets diagnostic tests (including audiograms). Formulates appropriate treatment plan. Presents a clear and concise history and physical and impression and treatment plan to the attending physician in clinic. Provides appropriate follow-up. Writes appropriate progress notes using SOAP format or variation thereof. Seeks opportunity to perform or assist in appropriate surgical and medical procedures including flexible fiber optic exam; otological exam using the microscope; cleaning the ears under the microscope; assisting or doing simple operative procedures such as tracheostomies and tonsillectomies; as well as assisting with major head and neck cancer procedures.

Method of Evaluation: Faculty observation in clinic; on rounds; and operating room.

#3 Medical Knowledge:

Educational Objectives: General competency in evaluation of otolaryngology patients with particular emphasis on routine otolaryngolocal problems such as external otitis; hoarseness; dizziness; otitis media; and cancer. To be familiar with the indicated treatments of the above for simple cases and at least the initial evaluation for more complex problems.

Method of Evaluation: Faculty observation in clinic; on rounds; and operating room.

#4 Practice-Based Learning:

Educational Objectives: Regularly identifies; has a complete knowledge and seeks answers from appropriate textbooks and literature. Demonstrates skills and understanding of principles of evidence based medicine. Shares results of knowledge with the ENT team. Able to self-evaluate effectiveness of the care provided to the patients.

#5 Interpersonal and Communication Skills:

Educational Objectives: Interacts with patient; family members; and colleagues; in a manner that engenders confidence; trust; and cooperation. Uses active listening skills. Works well as a team member.

#6 Systems-Based Practice:
