Prerequisites

Scheduling of this course must first be arranged with the Office of Medical Education prior to entering it on your 4th year schedule.

Course Description

The rotation duration is two to four weeks. It is divided among outpatient neurology clinic, inpatient consultation service and neurology ward according to student interest.

Evaluated Competencies

#1 Professionalism:

Educational Objectives: Provide a role model for professionalism. Demonstrate respect; honesty; dedication; caring; and empathy in interactions with patients and health care staff. Adhere to principles of patient confidentiality. Be able to self-assess professional behavior.

Method of Evaluation: Student participation during clinics and on consult service. Observation by attending physician. Feedback from nursing staff and patients.

#2 Patient Care:

Educational Objectives: Improve data gathering techniques by constant and immediate analysis of differential diagnosis. Learn proper technique for neurological examination to corroborate and complement differential diagnosis. Improve organization and information management skills. Procedures: learn spinal tap indications; procedure technique; and CSF analysis

Method of Evaluation: Student participation during clinics and on consult service. Observation by attending physician; including presentation of history and physical exam findings. Review of history and physical exam notes.

#3 Medical Knowledge:

Educational Objectives: Refresh basic neuroscience knowledge and learn application to clinical setting. Learn to integrate history and physical examination findings to answer clinical problems. Learn the diagnosis and management of common neurological disorders. Learn to recognize and treat neurological emergencies.

Method of Evaluation: Presentation on clinical case conference. Student participation and interaction with faculty.

#4 Practice-Based Learning:

Educational Objectives: Search literature about diagnosis and management of observed clinical cases.

Method of Evaluation: Interactions with attending physician on rounds.

#5 Interpersonal and Communication Skills:

Educational Objectives: Provide a role model for relationships and communication with patients and health care team. Provide positive and negative feedback and interpersonal and communication skills.

Method of Evaluation: Feedback from health care team and patients.

#6 Systems-Based Practice:

Educational Objectives: Learn about the importance of teamwork with other health care personnel. Learn about comprehensive health care management and teamwork with primary care providers.

Method of Evaluation: Student participation Direct interaction with health care team
