Course Description
The Fourth year elective is designed specifically for the student with a serious interest in a residency in urology. The level of responsibility will be the same as a 1st year resident. Students serve as the primary physician under faculty supervision for outpatient clinic and in-patient consults. Students will be expected to take a more active role in the operating room as well as pre-operative and post-operative care of urologic patients under the direct supervision of the urology staff. Self-education is stressed; but students also attend major departmental conferences. Recommended text for reading is an excellent understanding (i.e. complete read in preparation) of, “Smith’s General Urology,” Emil A. Tanagho and Jack McAninch Editors, most current edition is #17 at the time of this updated course description.

Educational Objectives: Ability to evaluate and render treatment plan for patients with the following conditions: prostate cancer; bladder cancer (superficial and invasive); kidney cancer; incontinence; urolithiasis; BPH; ED; and genito-urinary trauma.
Method of Evaluation: Student participation in outpatient clinic and in-patient consult services.
#4 Practice-Based Learning:
Educational Objectives: Demonstrates understanding of contemporary urology topic.
Method of Evaluation: Student will give a didactic on a contemporary urology topic to the urology staff.
#5 Interpersonal and Communication Skills:
Educational Objectives: Ability to get along with the urology staff.
Method of Evaluation: Student participation.
#6 Systems-Based Practice:
