Course Description

Students will experience a variety of clinical settings for Adolescent patients. Common problems include, sports physicals, reproductive health visits, pregnancy, depression/anxiety, ADD, Substance abuse, acuta and chronic medical problems

Course Materials

Required Reading List Pre-Post Test CD-ROM with articles will be provided. Student will have access to video and book library on adolescent health topics.

Evaluated Competencies

#1 Professionalism:

Educational Objectives: Student will demonstrate professional behavior in interactions with patients; families; and health care staff. Student will understand and practice adolescent care according to laws and accepted standards of confidentiality and privacy.

#2 Patient Care:

Educational Objectives: Student will develop skills in the assessment of adolescent patients in a variety of clinical settings (schools; adolescent health center; high risk teen clinic).

#3 Medical Knowledge:

Educational Objectives: Student will increase knowledge base of common problems affecting adolescents; as well as their diagnosis and treatment.

#4 Practice-Based Learning:

Educational Objectives: Student will utilize self-directed learning skills to expand knowledge base regarding problems seen in patient care settings; as well as other areas of interest.

#5 Interpersonal and Communication Skills:

Educational Objectives: Student will develop skills to communicate effectively with adolescents.
