Course Description
Students will spend one month with the Pediatric Cardiology faculty in Jacksonville. The experience will allow for broad exposure to problems in pediatric cardiology through direct patient contact in the cardiology clinic as well as observation in the echocardiography and catheterization laboratories and in the operating room. Each student's month will be tailored according to their interests.

Course Materials
Syllabus of articles pertaining to congenital and acquired heart disease as well as rhythm disturbances will be given to students rotating on the elective.

Educational Objectives: Student will demonstrate professional behavior in interactions with patients; families; and health care staff.
Method of Evaluation: Preceptor observation.
#2 Patient Care:
Educational Objectives: Student will develop skills in conducting history; physical examination; and follow-up evaluation of the child with congenital heart disease.
Method of Evaluation: Preceptor observation.
#3 Medical Knowledge:
Educational Objectives: Student will increase knowledge of the basic pathophysiology of common congenital heart lesions; their natural history; and their effect on various studies such as chest x-ray; EKG; and echocardiography.

#4 Practice-Based Learning:
Educational Objectives: Student will attend weekly cardiology staff conferences and cardiothoracic surgery conferences to participate in discussions regarding patient management decisions.
Method of Evaluation: Preceptor observation.
#5 Interpersonal and Communication Skills:
Educational Objectives: Student will demonstrate effective communication skills with patients; families; and the health care team.
Method of Evaluation: Preceptor observation
#6 Systems-Based Practice:
Educational Objectives: Student will learn the interactions between members of the health care team involved with in the care of children with heart disease; including surgery; critical care and anesthesia. They will also learn about agencies that facilitate such care for children in medically needy families.
