Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the process involved in providing pathology and laboratory services and the impact of these services have on patient care. Students will participate in signing out the cases in pathology and laboratory medicine and will become familiar with the pathogenesis of various disease process. Students will participate in Departmental educational activities and will interact with laboratory personnel, residents, fellows, and the faculty of the Department.

Evaluated Competencies

#1 Professionalism:

Educational Objectives: Demonstrate respect for patients/peers/co-workers as well as appropriate behavior in dealing with difficult situations. Demonstrate a commitment to ethical principles as evidenced by the ability to maintain patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA standards on all occasions. Reliably complete assignments on time. Reliably attend and be on time to conferences and assigned duties including sign out; frozen sections; and bench rotations.

Method of Evaluation: Student participation in conferences and assigned duties (sign out pathology cases; fine needle aspiration biopsy; frozen sections; and bench rotations) will be assessed by direct observation of the attending faculty. Feedback from the laboratory staff.

#2 Patient Care:

Educational Objectives: Correctly assess and interpret gross normal and pathologic findings. Correctly aseess and interpret microscopic findings. Gather essential information about patient history and additional studies and use it along with pathologic findings to develop and appropriate differential diagnosis. Learn proper techniques used for gross and microscopic examination of tissue. Learn to recognize appropriate clinico-pathologic correlations.

Method of Evaluation: Student participation in autopsy; sign out; and bench rotations will be assessed by direct observation of attending faculty. Presentation of pertinent patient history and ancillary studies to faculty during sign out.

#3 Medical Knowledge:

Educational Objectives: Demonstrate investigatory and analytic thinking approach to clinical situations; pathologic diagnoses; and/or abnormal laboratory findings. Reinforce basic pathology knowledge by reading in textbooks and primary literature. Reinforce the application of basic science knowledge to clinical or diagnostic problems.

Method of Evaluation: Student paricipation in discussion during conferences and interaction with attending faculty; residents; and fellows.

#4 Practice-Based Learning:

Educational Objectives: Search available literature regarding diagnosis and diagnostic tools for observed cases in order to expand available knowledge base. Perform independent examination of patient gross tissue and microscopic slides.

Method of Evaluation: Student will be asked questions regarding differential diagnosis and gross/microscopic findings during sign out.

#5 Interpersonal and Communication Skills:

Educational Objectives: Communicate effectively with clinicians and attending faculty through written and verbal interpretations of test results. Use effective listening skills; and provide pertinent information focused on specific issues.

Method of Evaluation: Student participation during daily sign out. Feedback from attending faculty and laboratory staff.

#6 Systems-Based Practice:

Educational Objectives: Obtain knowledge of healthcare laws; coding; and billing practices as they relate to the practice of pathology. Learn the importance of working as an interdisciplinary team member (understand interrelationships among pathologists; clinicians; and health care organizations). Understand the rationale for use of laboratory resources and the practice of cost effective laboratory medicine.

Method of Evaluation: Student participation and direct observation of attending faculty.
