Course Description
This rotation exposes the medical student to a variety of pediatric infectious diseases patients in the hospital and outpatient settings. It allows first-hand clinical work supervised by faculty and fellows at various inpatient settings at Wolfson Children's Hospital (i.e. general floors, pediatric and neonatal intensive care units) as well as pediatric infectious diseases outpatient clinic. The student will have the opportunity to join faculty members at the University's Rainbow Center (for the care of HIV patients) and the Duval County Health Department's weekly Tuberculosis Clinic. During the rotation the student will attend various didactic conferences for the division. He/She will be expected to participate in clinical case presentations, journal club, microbiology laboratory rounds, and grand rounds.

Evaluated Competencies
#1 Professionalism:
Educational Objectives: Student will be expected to show respect for colleagues and patients; and compassion for patient and families. Student will follow highest ethical standards; and follow all the rules and regulations and HIPAA standards.
Method of Evaluation: Preceptor observation.
#2 Patient Care:
Educational Objectives: Student will demonstrate ability to gather appropriate patient management data; and to present this in oral and written form.
Method of Evaluation: Preceptor observation. Review of write-ups.
#3 Medical Knowledge:
Educational Objectives: Student will be expected to have the understanding and knowledge of epidemilogy; etiology; pathophysiology; clinical features; differential diagnosis; diagnosis; treatment and outcome of common pediatric infectious diseases. Student will be required to attend the weekly fellow educational conferences; monthly core resident lectures; weekly department grand rounds; every other month M&M; monthly Infectious Diseases lecture; monthly HIV Grand Rounds; monthly Microbiology rounds; daily resident rounds and daily clinical rounds.
Method of Evaluation: Student will be evaluated by faculty during the rotation during one to one teaching sessions.
#4 Practice-Based Learning:
Educational Objectives: Student will demonstrate ability to perform self-directed activities to increase knowledge.
Method of Evaluation: Student will be asked to give at least one oral presentation about a topic selected by the student in consultation with the faculty. Student will be asked to participate in one journal club presentation. Student will be asked to do literature searches for topics associated with the patients they are following.
#5 Interpersonal and Communication Skills:
Educational Objectives: Student will be expected to communicate patient care issues to residents; fellows and faculty during and after rounds.
Method of Evaluation: Preceptor observation.
#6 Systems-Based Practice:
Educational Objectives: Student will gain an understanding of the multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.
Method of Evaluation: Attendance and participation in HIV program multidisciplinary meetings.
