Prerequisites
Completion of 3 years of medical school.
Course Description
Students are required to attend daily AM critical care rounds begining 0700 hrs Mon-Fri; noon conferences; pediatric critical care conferences and weekly pediatric grand rounds.

Meeting Place and Time
Students will be assigned to the PICU at Wolfson Children's Hospital; Jacksonville; from 0700-1600 hrs. weekdays and may wish to be involved with residents and physician assistants; for interesting night-time cases.
Course Materials
Students are encouraged to review pediatric critical care material in textbooks such as The Textbook of Pediatric Care-Editor: Rogers et al, the PICU resource folder on The PICU computer and distributed handout material.
Additional Information
The student is encouraged to stay in the PICU until 2300 1-2 evenings during the rotation and one weekend day for 6-8 hours.

#1 Professionalism:
Educational Objectives: Student will demonstrate professional behavior in interactions with patients; families; and health care staff.
Method of Evaluation: Preceptor observation
#2 Patient Care:
Educational Objectives: Student will demonstrate ability to obtain and integrate appropriate information regarding critically ill children.
Method of Evaluation: Preceptor observation and review of notes written on patients.
#3 Medical Knowledge:
Educational Objectives: 1. Expose the student to the principles of pediatric critical care. 2. Learn to assess cardiopulmonary instability. 3. Exposure to cardiopulmonary and/or fluid resuscitation. 4. Correlate pathophysiology to clinical situations. 5. Exposure to invasive monitoring and controlled rapid sequence intubation. 6. Understanding of the psychosocial effects of critical illness.
Method of Evaluation: Competency will be evaluated by preceptor observation.
#5 Interpersonal and Communication Skills:
Educational Objectives: Effectively communicate medical information to patients and their families; ancillary medical staff; and fellow physicians
